I joined Paul in Quito where we spent a day before heading to our true destination. Here are a few quick facts about Quito:
- It sits at 2,850 m (9,350 ft) above sea level, making it the second highest capital in the world.
- Quito is near two active volcanoes.
- There are only two seasons in Ecuador (Wet Season and Dry Season)
- Quito is so close to the equator that there is consistently 12 hours of daylight all year long. The sun rises and sets at about the same time all year long. Sun Rise is around 6 am (roughly) and sets around 6:00 pm (roughly) all year long.
View of one of the volcanoes from the airplane.
We took the teleférico (cable car) up the side of the volcano in the Andes, that is in city of Quito. The top of the the top of TelefériQo is at 4,100 m (13,400 ft) above sea level, and pretty windy due to the altitude.
And, yes - that is a giant black cloud looming above...
later that evening there was very brief thunder (luckily we were already down)

A giant swing set at the top of the mountain.
Quito was a great city, but we were on to even better things next!
